Today, with development in technology and change in trend, many new types of windows are being designed and planned for homes. There are many modern designs available, providing various functional advantages. Such windows are also highly energy efficient and cost saving. For no doubts, replacing them can benefit in many aspects. Windows besides enhancing look and appearance, they must also provide better and quick accessibility, particularly during emergency situations to help people escape through.

Window replacement also increases the value of a property, as it reflects that the premises are well-maintained.

Things to consider:

Here follow some notable points to consider before replacing:

The right time to replace: Look for certain signs that indicate the need to replace old ones. If the performance is poor, such as difficult to open and close, if there are any air leaks, fogging or condensation occurs between or on glass panes, impossible to open or so, then it is time to change it. If there are water stains, chipping or deterioration around windows, consider for a better choice. In addition to it, if windows appear outdated with style or design, then there is also chance to replace anytime owner requires. If cleaning has become a big hassle and if it is hard to find replacing parts, then consider replacing it.

Consider lifestyle and current models: Lifestyle of people is changing with a trend. This also demands the need to change looks of home with some new updates. Remember, windows deteriorate faster due to more exposure to weather and sunlight. Though there are many new designs or models available, it is equally important to choose the one that suit existing home style. Therefore, considering these factors, replacement should be done. Moreover, it is also very important to replace all windows at the same time, to make exterior appearance consistent. Improved designs can help in sealing sounds, traffic noise and other sounds entering the room. They serve with best soundproofing ability.

Energy efficient: There are windows coming with Low-E glass coatings, which helps in reducing heat transfer and prevent UV rays that fade carpets, furniture and walls. This glass will reflect heat back, therefore, the need to use cooler in summer and heater in winter are reduced. This, in turn, help save more energy and costs spent on paying electricity bills. Moreover, it appears slightly darker than regular glass when viewed from outside of the home, thus it gives better interior protection.

Operable venting: By replacing fixed units with operable venting doors or windows can further improve the flow of natural light and fresh air into the home. This helps to keep indoor with good environment.

Type to choose: Among different types available, taking appropriate decisions becomes tougher, as each type has its own advantage to offer. Metal and wood windows are commonly used for replacement. Metal types are placed using retro-fit windows, which has an exterior flange. This type conceals old frame from outside. Glass and bar dividing windows will be removed from creating a large opening.

Talking about wood windows, they are replaced using a retrofit window with the sill. This type is designed for accommodating the slope of the old sill. The contractor will remove exterior or interior stops of old windows along with a sash and leave perimeter frame in that place. New window fits into old perimeter frame perfectly. Some type also comes with aluminium wrap to fill gaps at edges.

Choice of frame material: There are different types of frame materials available such as vinyl, fibreglass, aluminium and wood. Vinyl is very popular for its less or no maintenance. It enables smooth operation of the window. Vinyl frames are relatively inexpensive.

Aluminum frame with single glaze can be replaced with dual glaze to improve the high performance of Low-E glass that provides better insulation. Aluminum is also available in dark bronze anodized frame that appears to be a good choice for dark frames or contemporary styles.

Fiberglass will insulate well and requires less maintenance. Fiberglass is available in dark colours and it can be easily painted, if colour scheme needs to be changed in future.

Wood type comes with or without exterior cladding that demands low maintenance. Choosing without exterior cladding will restore old appearance and original look of the window.  But they demand regular painting.
